  • To train and release local volunteers to work alongside us in seeing the good news being taken to every young person in Shrewsbury.
  • To work with local churches and create genuine partnership in reaching out to young people in Shrewsbury.
  • To create a network of Christian youth workers across Shrewsbury and other areas of Shropshire for inspiration, encouragement and prayer.

Our History

Shrewsbury Youth for Christ was founded in 2004 by a group of local Christians who had a passion for seeing the Christian faith communicated in our local secondary schools. In 2005, they employed the first SYFC schools worker, and from then on, SYFC staff and volunteers have been taking the Good News of Jesus into our local schools and colleges. Over the past almost 20 years, SYFC has been in local schools taking Christian assemblies and lessons, hosting lunch clubs and after-school clubs, mentoring, Christian unions, sports clubs and outdoor activities.

At Shrewsbury Youth for Christ, our mission statement is, “We’re about seeing young people’s lives changed by Jesus.” And we have many different aims as a charity that fit within this. But at the heart of it all, we want to love young people well, we want to support them well and we want to introduce them to Jesus and help them walk alongside him. Currently, we run 16 weekly groups within 4 secondary schools and the local college. On top of this, we run Christian assemblies, RE classes and year 6 transition lessons.

Our Mission

Shrewsbury Youth for Christ are a Christian charity seeking to see positive change in the lives of young people in our town. We do this by showing Jesus in a way which is relevant to every young person in Shrewsbury. In places like schools, churches and local communities, using sports, mentoring, the arts, and so much more!

Our Governance

Shrewsbury Youth for Christ is a chartered Centre of British Youth for Christ and enters into a new chartered agreement every year. We’re one of over 70 chartered centres of British Youth for Christ, operating in towns and cities across the UK. Our head office (in Halesowen, West Midlands) provides support staff, national mission teams and more to help us in our work. Youth for Christ was launched in Britain in 1946 by the evangelist Billy Graham, whose original vision statement was: “Geared to the times, anchored to the Rock”. Whilst our style of ministry has changed, our cause remains the same: to present the timeless truth of Jesus to the emerging generation.

Shrewsbury Youth for Christ is also registered with the Charity Commission, and our charity number is 1106486.

Shrewsbury Youth for Christ is governed by a body of trustees who represent different churches and denominations from across the town. Our trustees are volunteers who take legal responsibility for our governance. They ensure that we manage the finances well, comply with all the legal obligations of being a charity and abide by our constitution.

Shrewsbury Youth for Christ also has a body called the Council of Reference, which is also made up of individuals from different churches and denominations from across Shrewsbury. The Council of reference functions to advise the Trustee Body on all or any matters concerning the work of the Charity, and in particular the spiritual direction.

Our Faith

Our trustees, staff and volunteers support the Youth for Christ Statement of Faith as stated below.

We believe in:

  • The one true God who lives eternally in three persons – the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
  • The love, grace and sovereignty of God in creating, sustaining, ruling, redeeming and judging the world.
  • The divine inspiration and supreme authority of the Old and New Testament Scriptures, which are the written Word of God – fully trustworthy for faith and conduct.
  • The dignity of all people, made male and female in God’s image to love, be holy and care for creation, yet corrupted by sin, which incurs divine wrath and judgement.
  • The incarnation of God’s eternal Son, the Lord Jesus Christ – born of the virgin Mary; truly divine and truly human, yet without sin.
  • The atoning sacrifice of Christ on the Cross; dying in our place, paying the price of sin and defeating evil, so reconciling us with God.
  • The bodily resurrection of Christ, the first fruits of our resurrection; His ascension to the Father, and His reign and mediation as the only Saviour of the World.
  • The justification of sinners solely by the grace of God through faith in Christ.
  • The ministry of God the Holy Spirit, who leads us to repentance, unites us with Christ through new birth, empowers our discipleship and enables our witness.
  • The Church, the body of Christ both local and universal, the priesthood of all believers – given life by the Spirit and endowed with the Spirit’s gifts to worship God and proclaim the gospel, promoting justice and love.
  • The personal and visible return of Jesus Christ to fulfil the purposes of God, who will raise all people to judgement, bring eternal life to the redeemed and eternal condemnation to the lost, and establish a new heaven and new earth.
